Canal Pirates is a thoroughly enjoyable and slightly terrifying fast-moving children's adventure story full of fun and excitement.

As a young girl Nancy and her family move into the local area where Nancy then meets and befriends the other members of the gang who all have their own frailties in their own lives one way or another.

The three boys, Pat, Kevin and Jack already members of the canal pirates gang.

The four children with a twist of fate find and retrieve an old barge lamp when Nancy falls from a large pipe into the Canal ending up eye-to-eye with terrible Spike the Pike under the murky depths.

The magic lamp has such great powers it takes them back to a time from the past.

In the past, they meet a young girl Elizabeth and her Grandfather who are living on a working barge called the Nessie.

They are in mortal danger from two nasty men who own the boat yards, named Crabtree and Hensure.

These two men will try anything to get the Grandfather off the canal waterway by hook or by crook.

The first frightening journey into the past made by the children makes the four children realise there is a plaque on the wall in their own time that they have never noticed before indicating the death of Elizabeth and her Grandfather on a given date in 1938 by arson which is only three days away from now.

Should they return to the past to help the Grandfather and Elizabeth survive?

If they choose to help how do they know they will be able to get back home again?
