Each book in the "Oxford Reds" series is on a real-life subject, with a simple lively text and fully illustrated (this title is illustrated by Chris Mould).

Many are written by well-known children's writers. Did you know that pirate flags were not always black and white - often they were red, meaning 'we will shed your blood without mercy!' "Oxford Reds Pirates" takes us through real and pretend pirates, pirate clothes, the truth and myths, as well as describing modern-day pirates!

It is written by an author who communicates enthusiasm, passion and understanding for the subject.

Chris Powling has been a head teacher and a lecturer in English and has contributed to Radio 4.

He has had very many children's books published, including the Harry series for A & C Black and Sharks in the "Oxford Reds" series.

Chris won the Smarties prize for "The Conker as Hard as a Diamond".

Chris Mould has illustrated for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Channel 4, West Yorkshire Playhouse and has had books published by a variety of authors.

Chris's first books for OUP were the popular "Hank the Clank" series.

He has since gone on to adapt and illustrate popular classics for children.
