Algernon Henry Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill, South East England, in 1869.

In his youth he trained as a doctor at Wellington College in Berkshire, and went on to pursue a number of careers, in areas as varied as milk farming, modelling, journalism and violin teaching.

In his thirties, Blackwood returned to England from New York, where he had spent a number of years, and began to write stories of the supernatural. 'A Haunted Island' was Blackwood's first significant story about the Canadian backwoods, It is set around a house which is abandoned to the wilderness.

Returning to the spot where, unbeknown to him, he was murdered and scalped in a previous life, the narrator witnesses a ghostly re-enactment of this event; or, alternatively, he receives a premonition of a death at the hands of the Indians whom he glimpses at the end of the story.
