Basing her research upon statistical and mathematical models, the author has identified five discrete marital types valid across a number of sociological and demographic dimensions: Traditionals, Independents, Separates, Separate-Traditionals, and Traditional-Independents. These classifications form a scheme for exploring ways in which couples vary in their values about marriage, in their communication with one another and in the level of marital happiness they achieve.
