Set in and around Birmingham, this autobiography tells the story of one boy's dash to "cop" every British Rail steam locomotive by "bunking" into as many engine sheds up and down the country as possible.

It also gives a very human social history of life, school and work in Birmingham during the 1950s and 60s.
