John Tulloch (1823-86) was one of the leading British intellectual historians of the nineteenth century, who combined a deep understanding of the development of religious and philosophical ideas with a practical comprehension of education and a recognition of the need for its reform.

In his day he was to become the most prominent churchman in Scotland.

The work reprinted here was his magnum opus. Tulloch's Rational Theology and Christian Philosophy remains a classic exposition and an important source 130 years after its first publication.

In the intervening period - and especially in the last thirty years - the relevance to an understanding of the development of philosophy, science and politics in seventeenth-century England has come to be recognized as lying in a proper appreciation of the central theological concerns of the age.

For that appreciation, these two volumes of Tulloch's will always be indispensable.
