Without suitable management, hazardous waste may pose a risk to human health and the environment.

We also need to manage our hazardous waste in a more sustainable way and ensure that, where possible, we recycle and recover hazardous waste rather than sending it for disposal.

New, nationally significant infrastructure for the management of hazardous waste is needed to protect the environment and human health and to allow us to manage hazardous waste in a more sustainable way, recycling and recovering the waste where possible.

The Hazardous Waste National Policy Statement (NPS) sets out the strategic need and justification of Government policy for the provision of such infrastructure.

It will be used to guide decisions made by the Planning Inspectorate.

The NPS provides a framework for the Secretary of State, but also provides guidance throughout for potential developers and in particular advises on what should be included in their assessment of the potential impacts of a particular project.
