Concepts of myth are often characterized in terms of presence, and by the ways in which they are immediate and overpowering. At the same time, they also refer to the representational character of myth, stressing the aspects of mediation and reflection. The essays trace the dynamic between presence and representation in concepts of myth from antiquity to the present time, and show the close interconnections between concepts of myth and literature.
