Following the progress of a pair of North American black bear cubs, this book charts their progress from birth to their second summer when, almost grown, they leave their mother to set up homes of their own. Karen Wallace has also written "Think of an Eel" (winner of the TES Junior Information Book Award and the Emil/Kurt Maschler Award), "Think of a Beaver", "My Hen is Dancing" and "Red Fox". Barbara Firth was awarded the Smarties Book Prize and the 1988 Kate Greenaway Medal for her illustrations in "Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?" and the 1989 Emil/Kurt Maschler Award for "The Park in the Dark".
