HIV and Infant Feeding Counselling : A Training Course - Trainer's Guide

See all formats and editions

Approximately 800,000 children under 15 years of age are newly infected with HIV every year.

Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV accounts for approx. 90 per cent of these infections. Up to 20 per cent of infants born to HIV-infected mothers may acquire HIV through breastfeeding.

There is a need for infant feeding counsellors. In response to this need, this training course has been developed by The World Health Organization, the United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS and UNICEF.

It consists of 16 training sessions using a variety of teaching methods. Intended for use by trainers and course directors, this manual contains what the trainer needs in order to lead participants through the course, including the information discussed in each session, detailed instructions on how to teach each session, exercises and their answers, checklists, forms and stories.

Various interactive methods of teaching are used.
