Rehabilitation surgery for deformities due to poliomyelitis : techniques for the district hospital

This handbook is one of several by the World Health Organization for the guidance of doctors providing surgical services in small hospitals.

The text is divided into two parts, the first giving general information on poliomyelitis and its sequelae.

Explanations are given as to which patients are most likely to benefit from surgery and the basic techniques involved.

The second part describes the specific surgical procedures, aided by detailed diagrams, for correcting deformities of the elbow, hip, knee, foot and ankle.

Standard surgical techniques have been selected where possible.

Essential instruments, equipment and materials are listed in the annexes.
