Aphra Behn was the first woman to earn her living in England as a writer.

An early - and outspoken - feminist, she was also a notable Restoration playwright, novelist and poet.

This edition brings together for the first time her most important writings, focusing principally on the plays written during the era of Restoration comedy, a genre now enjoying enormous popular revival. Alongside the dramatic works, Dr Lyons has included works which vividly recount travels, love-affairs, literary allegiances, all couched in the ample idiom of her libertine wisdom, and which richly illustrate her views on feminism and professionalism. Modern spelling and punctuation are used throughout the texts.
