Despite the multiplicity of scholarly works on Scottish church history which have appeared in recent decades, very little has been written about what religious men and women would have regarded as their deepest concerns.

This anthology aims to rectify that omission by gathering together payers and praises from writing by Scottish Christians since the time of the Reformation.

The extracts quoted range from William Dunbar and John Knox across the troubled times of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the very recent past.

The volume concludes with commentary on a prayer by George MacLeod from Iona.

Throughout the text there is linking and explanatory commentary by the late Professor Cheyne distilling his immense knowledge and love of Scottish religious literature in his humorous and economic style.

The book will appeal to theology and divinity students, to students of Church history and those interested in the development of Scottish prayer.

The book has an Introduction by Professor Stewart (Jay) Brown of New College, Edinburgh.
