Prolific gambler Tennessee (Payne) sets himself up in the gold rush town of Sandy Bar in California at Elizabeth Farnham (Fleming)'s saloon.

After Tennessee emerges victorious from a high-stakes game of poker the loser sends a hired killer to eliminate him but before the gunslinger can fulfil his contract he is killed by Cowpoke (Reagan), a headstrong prospector.

When Tennessee discovers that Cowpoke is set to marry a known gold-digger however, he intervenes with the aim of preventing her from sinking her hooks into Cowpoke.

But this, along with Tennessee being framed for murder, causes a rift between the two men.
