Charlie (Gormley) and Neville (Smith) are a directing and scriptwriting partnership searching for the funding and the staff required to make their envisioned film, 'Gulf and Western', a reality.

The pair root around among the attendees at the 1977 Edinburgh Film Festival in hopes of finding someone who will help them and there they encounter such film pioneers as Wim Wenders, Stephen Frears, John Boorman and Alan Bennett.
