Sound scientific knowledge is fundamental to the long-term planning and management of the Solent and its coastline.

As such, it is appropriate to bring together in this book, the results and observations of various researchers, to establish the present level of understanding of the Solent System.

These Proceedings incorporate scientific papers dealing with four different topics, covered over the two days of the Solent Science Conference: coastal processes; water quality and chemistry; biodiversity and conservation; and integrative Solent case studies.

The papers are supplemented by a range of short contributions (presented originally as posters) which examine more specific pieces of research, and the findings of the Conference Workshops.

Additionally, two maps have been included in the preface, showing the general location and main sites referenced.

The present volume provides further recognition of the 'systems approach' to science and management, which attempts to integrate multidisciplinary science through interaction with various decision-making authorities. Given the increasing number of European Directives and the need for their implementation, it is vital that those who work in the Solent have the support of a strong scientific base.
