Since the beginning of the century there has been a growing awareness of the psychiatric impact of certain severe stressors on an individual's ability to function effectively, in both their personal and professional lives.

In more recent years, attention has been focused on the psychological consequences for those exposed directly to, or working in the aftermath of, extremely traumatic incidents. The pattern of harm which follows traumatic events has to some extent been charted, although not without great debate on both the definition and parameters of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

As a result, psychologists are now turning their attention to developing responses that serve to minimize further psychlogical harm, post-trauma.
