The sixteen essays presented to Nigel Glendinning to mark his retirement as Professor of Spanish at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, reflect his exceptional prestige and versatility as a specialist on the literature and visual arts of Spain from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

They cover a range of subjects particularly associated with Professor Glendinning: text and image in the Baroque, aspects of 18th-century literature, and the art of Goya.

They include an edition, with commentary, of Calderon's important `Deposicion' on the art of painting, and a presentation of two peviously unknown drawings by Goya.
