This work provides an overview of the quality of life in British, American and European cities, and incorporates a guide to literature on the subject.

It tracks current thinking and research and addresses a selection of the key factors governing how people perceive quality of life in cities.

The first section examines: the debate about what constitutes quality of life; the question of how to measure it, with reference to studies from Britain, America and Europe; and the factors determining quality of life as it is experienced by individuals (concentrating on those which are amenable to change at the local level).

Section two focuses on the issues and policy implications behind each of the following key local factors: the safety and security of one's person and belongings; adequate and affordable shelter, a well-planned, user-friendly and human place in which to live; a safe and healthy environment; and public services which help sustain all these elements.

Each chapter starts with a detailed overview of the topic followed by an extensive list of references to other information sources.

Detailed author, corporate body and subject indexes are provided for easy access to information.
