In 1939, International Harvesters Farmall brand introduced a revolutionary new line of all-purpose tractors designed for small- to medium-sized farmsto replace their F series. Offering an array of engine and equipment options, these new machines were bestowed with letters as their model names, from the compact A, B, and C models to the larger H and M tractors. Fittingly known as the Letter Series, the tractors were even given a streamlined design by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Not surprisingly, they went on to become some of the most widely produced and best-selling American farm tractors of all time.

By 1947, Farmall had built over 1 million tractors. Amazingly, many are still in use today, not just as collector vehicles, but often as working farm tractors. In The Complete Book of Farmall Letter Series Tractors, International Harvester historian and researcher Gregory Smith explores the entire range of Letter Series tractors, from their inception to their final model year in 1954. Smith covers each model, including special versions within each, such as Diesel and LPGversions, orchard tractors, and the Super series models that began appearing in 1947. Smith also explains the evolution of Letter Series features, such as the Culti-Vision front-end design, wider wheel tracks, and dropped axles. Coverage is also given to the entry-market Cubunveiled in 1947, as well as overseas versions of the Letter Series. Alas, no good thing is meant to last.
