Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 27.Geophysical imaging techniques and petrologic probes are yielding dramatic new evidence of the structure and dynamic impact of mantle on plate kinematics.

The thin-viscous sheet and extrusion tectonics models explain much of Asian geology in terms of the Indo-Eurasian collision.

Enigmatic features remain, however, including the rapid post-Mesozoic formation of western Pacific marginal basins, widespread postextrusion basalt and shoshonite magmatism, and the presence of isotopically anomalous asthenosphere beneath the region.
