Haydn and England

Joseph Haydn spent two long spells in England, in 1791-92 and 1794-95.

His impact on the London musical scene was huge, and he was constantly in demand both as a composer and performer.

In this book, which accompanies an exhibition at The British Library, Arthur Searle draws upon the considerable body of documentary evidence to tell the story of Haydn's life in England, discussing the works that he composed at this time - most notably the "London" symphonies.

He also provides a complete listing of Haydn manuscripts in The British Library.

The book is illustrated with portraits, contemporary prints, newspaper advertisements, letters and pages from 15 Haydn manuscripts.
