The Anglican Tradition in South Africa : A Historical Overview

See all formats and editions

Anglicanism in South Africa was brought to the Cape in the early nineteenth century by visitors and settlers.

It had its roots in the Church of England and drew from those roots for clergy and layworkers.

This monograph is not a definitive study, but is an outline of the history of Anglicanism in South Africa.

It encompasses the formation of the Church of the Province of South Africa in 1870; the Colenso controversy; the effect of legal cases in establishing its independence from the Church of England; and the struggle of some members against social injustice.
