Employing locum consultants : matters arising from the employment of Dr Elwood

This is the report of the investigation into the use of locum medical practitioners by four National Health Service Trusts following an inquiry into the accuracy of reports by locum consultant histopathologist Dr Elwood.

It does not assess Dr Elwood's competence but raises a number of important issues about the employment and management of locum consultants.

The report offers guidelines to health authorities within the National Health Service not only for the employment of locums but also for monitoring and reviewing their work.
