This volume draws on the College's largely unexplored archives and on the evidence of excavations to illuminate its history.

Subjects covered include the Franciscan monastery which existed on the site before the College; the life, work and circle of Lady Frances Sidney, Foundress of the College, and her nephew Sir Philip Sidney; the scientific contribution made by Fellows at the beginning of the twentieth century; and the conception and building of the unique neo-Baroque Chapel at the same period.

As a whole, this collection of essays adds to the knowledge of the history of Sidney Sussex College, showing how it has retained its distinctive identity within the University of Cambridge while changing markedly over time.
