The idea for Sunspot started as a joke when a friend complained to Laurie Birnsteel that her dog hated change.

When asked if her dog was born in May, the friend replied yes. "That's why," Birnsteel replied. "Your dog is a Taurus, and Tauruses hate change." Thus began more than two years of research - including hundreds of questionnaires and interviews with dog owners - into the relationships of dogs and their signs - more specifically, how their astrological signs affect their behaviour.

Each sign has its own chapter in Sunspot. Beginning with lists of the "good doggy" and "bad doggy" characteristics for each, Birnsteel proceeds to offer real-life examples of dogs behaving in ways consistent with their signs.
