In 1986 the government announced the introduction of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQS).

Key aims of this initiative were to raise the levels of the workforce by increasing the number of take-up of vocational qualifications and rationalizing their provision.

This research was undertaken to assess the factors which influence the take-up of NVQ/SVQs by individuals.

Information is provided on the motivation and incentive to take-up the courses, including any barriers to take-up, individuals' knowledge and understanding of NVQ/SVQs, factors associated with completion, including any obstacles and obstacles to progression towards higher NVQ/SVQ levels.
