Jerry Ellis ran away from Alabama to New York when he was seventeen and hitchhiked there, changing his life forever.

Though he graduated from the University of Alabama and attended an MFA program in Oklahoma, by the age of twenty-six he thumbed enough miles to circle the Earth five times.

He got rides with Mr. Universe and a group of the Hells Angels and people from ALL walks of life, inspiring him to become a writer, investigating the Human Condition as Jack Kerouac did, Ellis was the first person in the modern world to walk the 900 mile route of the Trail of Tears, his resulting book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Alon the Cherokee Trail of Tears, nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by Random House.

The book in May 2021 went into development to become a major feature film.

For two decades he has lived every spring and fall in Rome, Italy.
