In late 1943 Robert Kahn was arrested by Klaus Barbie's militia, rescued by the Resistance, and finally recaptured.

From prison, he arranged for the safety of his wife and children, but Jeanne Kahn would not leave Lyon without her husband.

On August 11, 1944 she was sent to Auschwitz, an experience about which she never spoke.
