This new monograph is one of the first studies of the German short story using a narratological methodology. Neuse presents the three main narrative situations in the short story: the authorial, the figural, and the first person, and by concentrating on the relationship between the narrator and protagonist provides fresh insights into the short stories of some of Germany's most prominent writers of the twentieth century.
