Shengongxi in Hong Kong

The research methodology of combining drama with religious rites and sacrifices was first proposed by J.E.

Harrison, a British scholar on Ancient Greece in 1910.Her viewpoints were a source of inspiration for later generations of scholars.The author of this book inherits the aforementioned viewpoints and is heavily influenced by the method of field research.

He has been involved in different Hong Kong communities to record in text and image their ritual of thanksgiving to the gods and spirits: Shengongxi.The topics of this book points directly to the core meaning of the existence of traditional drama, and also fills a void in Chinese scholarship.There are also analysis of typologies, performing habits of Cantonese, Chiuchow and Hokkien Shengongxi varieties, rituals, customs and taboos of communities and theatrical troupes.
