Earthing Solutions Standards, Safety and Good Practice : Conference Proceedings, 23-24 June 1997

This conference addressed the issues surrounding earthing practice.

It looked at the latest developments in terms of both legislation and practical approaches to earthing problems following through the steps taken on actual projects.

The papers under "Standards and Legislation" looked at: earthing and bonding, and earthing arrangements and equipotential bonding for IT installations. "Safety of Low and High Voltage Installations" covered: designing for safety in medium and LV electrical systems, prevention, replacement and safety implications of earth conductor theft and site ROEP continuous monitoring, safety assessment of earthing systems at power frequency, and the place for sensitive earth fault protection. "Measurement and Solutions" dealt with: earthing testing - practicalities and problems, experimental methods of examining substation earthing systems, and measurement of earthing system resistance - problems and solutions. "Earthing Systems for IT" studied: there is only one earth, and earthing bonding in communications rooms. "Earthing for EMC" included: earthing of screened copper cables between buildings, and compliance to EMC legislation, its effect on achieving good bonding practices. "Practical Earthing - an International Perspective" looked at: better grounding and generator neutral earthing study on a Middle East offshore platform. "Substation Earthing Systems" examined: designing substation buried earth systems to comply with modern touch voltage requirements, and hot or cold? - a programme approach to assessment. Supplementary papers covered: early lightning warning systems and HF performance of an earthing system - effect on nearby systems.
