This book is designed to provide guidance for individuals and organisations involved in the creation, maintenance, use and long terms preservation of GIS- based digital resources.

The overall emphasis is on archaeological data, though the information presented has much wider disciplinary implications.

The guide emphasises the proceses of long-term preservation, archiving and effective data re-use; and, consequently, the adherance to recognised standards and the recording of essential information about particular resources are recurring themes throughout the discussion.

The Archaeology Data Service is a UK-based organisation undertaking the archive storage of digital data on every conceivable archaeological topic.

This first guide sets out the aims and objectives of the series and gives sections on spatial data types, structuring, organising and maintaining information, documenting the GIS data set, depositing information, useful definitions and references.
