Book Three : Intimacy

Who is God-really?
Have you ever quickly formed an opinion about someone you'd never even met, only to get to know them . . . and realize your first impression was wrong? Isn't it interesting that sometimes, as our relationships grow, those people eventually become our good friends, and we can't imagine our lives without them?

Often, the picture people form in their minds about who God is turns out to be quite different from who he really is, because they have never made an effort to get to know him.

Over time, their false idea of God causes them to want to have nothing to do with him. This means that they miss out on the most important and intimate relationship they could ever experience.

The Apostle Paul shared his desire for intimacy with God in his letter to the Church in the city of Phillipi. After all he had
experienced throughout his journey, he considered knowing Jesus Christ to be the greatest investment he could make with his life, worth any sacrifice to achieve it. He said, "I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things." And then he declared, "I want to know Christ . . ." (Philippians 3:8,10 NIV).

Most of us long to have at least one close relationship that allows us to be fully known and fully loved for who we are, regardless of our many flaws. These types of relationships are often hard to find, and sometimes it's easier to keep our relationships on a surface level due to our fear of being rejected and disappointed.

Many of us long for a close relationship with God, but for some reason, we think it's unattainable. If we have a hard time finding intimacy in human relationships, doesn't it make sense that it would be more difficult to find intimacy with God?

So, who is God, really? How do we get to know more about who he really is? And how does this knowledge allow us to draw closer to him?
